Tómarúm – Ash in Realms of Stone Icons (Prosthetic Records) [Progressive Black Metal]

Proving once and for all that you don’t actually need to be bad at your instruments in order to write black metal, Tómarúm nails the emotion, the atmosphere, and the spectacle on this album. Shredding isn’t typically looked at as a medium for powerful emotional expression, but the leads on these songs (particularly on “Where No Warmth Is Found”) hit just as hard as the wall of melancholy chords and pained screams. Even if you’re not the type to demand instrumental adroitness from your black metal bands, you’ll want to check this out if you’re into that sad shit. 5/6/22 (Spear)
