This Toilet Tuesday (6/4/19)

It’s Toilet Tuesday once more, and we have a pile of new music here for you. While there aren’t a ton of albums releasing this week, there’s an inordinate amount of good stuff, certainly enough to keep you occupied. Karhu and Hans have picked out a couple choice cuts, but there’s more in the list below. As always, let us know if there’s anything we missed.

Misanthropic Rage – Towards the Greyscale Aphorysm (Godz ov War Productions) [Weird Angery Black Metal]

Not particularly “out there” in terms of its building blocks, which are largely familiar black and death metal elements, but the resulting concoction is not too conventional. The way they treat black metal is perhaps comparable to Anaal Nathrakh’s later records; “modern-sounding” elements like that snare-only beat in “Nothing but Rage” and the nigh-operatic cleans sprinkled throughout certainly reminded me of those guys. All in all, it’s interesting enough to hold the attention (even throughout the long, doomy track), but for a full record, it might need more surprising twists here and there. 6/6/19 (Hans)

Vulture – Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves (Metal Blade) [Heavy/Speed Metal]
Listen to “Stainless Glare,” “Murderous Militia,” “Beyond the Blade”

If you like your speed metal rowdy but clean, with a clear but punchy production, closer to thrash than trad metal but with a melodic punch and topped with piano intros and mid-tempo tracks, Vulture’s sophomore is easily your best bet this week. 6/7/19 (KARHU)

Coffins/Second to None – Nine Cocoons of Dens to F (split- HPGD) [Death Doom]

Coffins is the best damn leadweight death/doom bands that exclusively deals in riffs that sound like you’re getting over the head with a hammer, and nobody asked your opinion – you’re going to sit down, you’re going to get hammered, and you’re going to like it. Again, and again. Second To None, are, in fact, Second To Some, some being Coffins, but they’re a very good afterparty. 6/7/19 (KARHU)

Barbarian – To No God Shall I Kneel (Hells Headbangers) [Black/Speed Metal]

Barbarian’s brand of blackened trad metal keeps getting better, and to the point where they sound like few other bands. It’s got all the rowdiness and fun of your regular black/thrash act, but thrice the riffs and manyfold the Manilla Road. 6/7/19 (KARHU)
