O Odorous Edifice, O Upper-Decker Deity, may thy lid remain lifted for a thousand years. This week we’ve got nasty sucralose, French Revolution-core, and an animal I’m glad doesn’t exist. Gaijin – Children of Dust (Independent) [Instrumental / Tech Death]
Instrumental tech death is a difficult genre to balance; without vocals to add a human element, songs can begin to feel clinical—the aural equivalent of a hospital waiting room. With this layer stripped away, the instruments need to speak their own language to convey emotions, and therein lies the issue: odd time signatures and shredding conjure moments of awe (and jealousy), but can struggle to tell an impactful story. Gaijin‘s new EP, Children of Dust, flows naturally through its moods: dense, tangled riffs evoke confusion and discomfort, and bright, melodic chords give listeners room to breathe (and maybe feel some hope, as a treat). The session drumming from Conny Pettersson (Anata) is particularly diverse, steering the compositions down myriad paths—some well-trodden; some just cleared and awaiting further exploration. -Roldy
