Toilet Tuesday time, friends. We’ve gathered up as much new music as we could find this week, and while not much stuck out to me this week, Karhu’s got a couple to talk about. Give those blurbs a read and check out that list below.

Primitive Man – Immersion (Relapse Records) [Sludge/Doom/Drone]
Listen

Having been responsible for some of the most hideous sludge ever collected on tape, Primitive Man seems set focusing on the former part strictly for immersion. The promo elaborates on how the record builds and builds up on tension, but that just isn’t true. I’m not saying there isn’t tension, because there is, but that’s all there is. All tension, all the time, no release, no buildup, no climax, no explosion. A static wall of tension and noise, unmovable, irredeemable. The drums hit now and then, but there’s no beat, no movement, only a percussive noise and the same goes for the bass, while the guitars are set on producing a wall of distortion owing more to McCarthy’s solo noise work than Primitive Man’s past sludge albums. As if an attempt to insult, “Menacing” briefly recalls how the band used to, in fact, groove, proceeds to groove for a few seconds, and returns to it’s existence as a very narrow adaptation of anxiety. Depending on your take, Immersion might be the best, or most fruitless Primitive Man. 8/14/20 (Karhu)

Bear Mace – Charred Field of Slaughter (Independent) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Hibernation – Destroyed by Bears”

Yeah, Bolt Thrower were pretty great, weren’t they. Mark “Crossbow Death” Sugar of Trials/High Spirits/Black Sites fame, and his band of merry men in tights (Infidel Castro & Fucking Death, do you think they’re being serious) think so too. I guess Bear Mace aren’t all about Bolt Thrower though, so after the spot on impression in the beginning, they incorporate more thrash riffs and a whole slew of boneheadedness in their fun. I tell you, these songs don’t have a university degree in cultural studies. But incorporating ideas from outside the BT-box, and having no hardcore influence to eat up all their riffs (looking at you, Kommand), Charred Field might just be the most inspired and best damn BT-death album you’ll hear all week. 8/14/20 (Karhu)
