You thought you could escape Toilet Tuesday, but it comes for us all in the end. That’s honestly pretty sick, though, since it means none of us has to search out new releases on our own time. As has been the case all summer, this is a pretty lean week in terms of volume of new releases, but the overall quality is above average in my estimation. Arkenfire – Trials Through Time (Independent) [Power Metal]

It’s power metal with actual riffs! Amazing! Snark aside, this is a solid selection if you like your power metal to have a sort of trad-metal-adjacent feel to it. The riffs are a cut meaner than the power metal rank and file, and the stripped-down “live band” feel is refreshing in a genre that likes to lean into tons of instrumental layers and choirs and orchestras and all that. Not to say that there’s anything wrong with any of that, but the Arkenfire approach shows that there’s a world beyond all of that as well. 8/20/21 (Spear)
