This Toilet Tuesday (9/15/20)
New week, new music- you know the drill. Karhu’s picked out a couple albums that may be worth your time, and there’s a lot more in the larger list below. Let us know what your picks are for the week and tell us why we should listen to them.
Dynfari – Myrkurs er þörf (Aural Music) [Black Metal]

Dynfari’s last few works have explored more progressive and post-rock influenced soundscapes, and while The Four Doors of the Mind did catch Joakim diStiq’s eye, it also left him a little on the fence. Myrkurs er þörf dives into the themes of suicide, self-destruction and suffering defeat against your own mind, and musically returns to punchier, bleaker and darker territory. Though still still rather melodic, and definitely informed by their previous misadventures, “Ég tortímdi…” doea a fine job of still sounding like the same band, while stripping much of their essence away. 9/18/20 (Karhu)
Hiidenhauta – Riivin (Independent) [Black Metal]

The folkloristic lyrics written in a poetic metre called the kalevalametre, album concept about The Great Famine of of 1695-97 and general use of language have always been much more interesting than Hiidenhauta’s two, lackluster full-lengths. Which is a shame as the earliest material did hint at far greater possibilities. Riivin seems to take a much needed step forward, and the three singles so far form a more consistent experience than I’ve gotten used to from the band. The loss of a keyboardist means they aren’t getting much used, making the sound drier and more monochromatic than before and leading the band further astray from the pieces they’ve made work before. So that “Riidenlieko” would kind of be good is a leap of gargantuan proportions. There’s still not much of memorable or musically noteworthy moments, so hope only exists in the event it’s the first of many leaps to come. But I’ve chosen to highlight it all the same, out of curiosity and interest geared towards the non-instrumental side of their songwriting. 9/18/20 (Karhu)
