If you’re in the American Midwest, you know what I’m talking about. The gates of winter have been flung wide open and buried us under a couple feet of snow, and weather-related obstacles and obligations prevented the delivery of Toilet Tuesday in a timely manner. Fortunately, we were able to scrape together a list in spite of that, and we’ve got some super sick stuff for you this week.

I took off some time complimenting Kaunis Kuolematon’s sophomore two years ago, for it’s melding of melodic death metal and doom that lacked the bitter bereavement of many of their ilk, whoever they may be. It’s difficult to point out any singular peers for Kaunis Kuolematon, and I think Toilet-friends Hinayana in their slow but abundantly melodeath approach though Kaunis Kuolematon’s more complex array of influences would seem to call upon the later work of Swallow The Sun. Rather doom-influenced melodeath than the other way around, as is usual, and interspersed with an abundance of warm, clean sections and Heikkilä’s recognizable voice that alone sets them apart. Their new EP, available on physical media through RecordshopX exclusively, would seem to change little, if at all, based on “Yön Tunteina.” Though it is a well chosen single, cohesive and simple to adopt, yet touching upon each aspect of their sound. 2/14/19 (Karhu)

If you haven’t heard of A Million Dead Birds Laughing, go here and catch yourself the fuck up; these guys rule. To the Ether is no exception, as it builds on the unstable dissonant foundation of their previous EP and dives headlong into some truly abyssal depths as they explore their sound. They’ve mixed some dark ambient material into the chaotic tech death that forms the bulk of the music in the form of both background effects and full interludes, and it meshes perfectly. This is one of those albums you just have to listen to to really get it; the best way I can describe it is like the death metal equivalent of Deathspell Omega, but even that’s not perfectly apt.
