Flush It Friday: Bandcamp 2020 For Some Reason?

Share:

I dunno. I got nothin’.

I’ve spent all week listening to the new Tyler and the Denzel Curry album from earlier in the year and of course Chat Pile, about which I could make this post, but I had an idea to go back into the annals of my Bandcamp and pick out some choice albums… only to discover that it has no records of any BC purchases I made prior to 2020. Whatever they were, they were just totally gone. But! I did pick out 5 purchases I “made” in that fateful year I’m sure we’re all very glad I’m bringing up on November 1 in a way that is not causing anybody any sort of anxiety whatsoever. Nothing is happening on Tuesday the 5th. Nothing at all.

It’s also worth noting that when I go to the page for these individual albums, it has no record of me having purchased them. Who knows.

Covered Bridges – Covered Bridges
Neverwood Records | October 9, 2020

I bought a comfy synth album in 2020? I know some folks on the Toilet were reviewing dungeon synth back then, but I wasn’t paying attention. But now that I look at the cover and cassette and hear the autumnal doots, I know why I was so enchanted. I know nothing about this New Hampshire project, but they’ve consistently released music since Covered Bridges, so I suppose it’s time to go dungeon diving. This is the perfect soundtrack to a placid November morning. I am enchanted, I am ensorcelled, I am floating calmy like a golden leaf to the dew-brushed ground.

Fullhearted – Nothing Next to Me
Rockstudio | May 1, 2003

I don’t know when precisely I bought a digital copy, but maybe it was 2020. Fullhearted were dear friends with whom we played nearly every show in high school. Influenced by Saves the Day and the emo/pop-punk that held serve in the early 00s, we were always in awe of what felt so much more sophisticated than the straight edge mosh and retro ’80s youth crew shit we were playing. It doesn’t even matter that Sean can’t hit those notes. I miss it all so much. Sean, Mitchell, Erik, Chris, John, I love you all very much. Especially you, John.

healing powers – listing your problems, with no intent to solve them
Friendly Otter | January 29, 2013

I have absolutely no memory of this band nor record, and I am sure I bought it before 2020. Maybe I got a download code with a cassette or something at a show? Maybe a blog referenced it. Scrolling through, the album struck me as hilarious, and, lo and behold, we have an absolutely gorgeous skramz record that’s something between early TWIABP and Funeral Diner. “i’m no fun” is precisely that, a not very fun track that is drenched in pathos. The ecstatic two-step ending belies its melancholic grandeur. This is an absolute gem that many of you will love.

Friendship – I&II
Sentient Ruin | February 17, 2017

I see what’s happening. Some of the records and tapes I bought pre-2020 are being retroactively included on my bandcamp as some sort of glitch in the matrix. I can’t even be sure I haven’t talked about Friendship before, but this was my first taste of the madness that is Sentient Ruin well before I ever knew the Toilet existed. By now, we all know Friendship to be one of the most unforgiving and hostile powerviolence bands out there. “TROY,”  “Compton,” “Bottomless Pit,” “Abuse,” and “El Chapo” are all classics. This is nothing but feedback-drenched enmity and bitter, snarling breakdowns.

Instilled – Unfinished Business
State of Mind Recording | Sometime in 2004

20 years later and it’s still the best hardcore album to ever come out of Atlanta. Champ went on to be in Foundation, Adam is in Conservative Military Image, and Jesse is in a million bands. From opener “To My Cellmate” to the unforgettable closer “Looks Like Rain,” Unfinished Business was unstoppable, standing as tall as the giants of early 00s hardcore. I’ve waxed poetic about this record both on the Discord and in real life too many times before, and I will probably just never stop. “All my screaming words in / motherfuck the way it looks like rain.”

And there’s more??

You ever have one of those weeks when you’re so busy and so tired that you can’t even be sure what it is you actually accomplished, though it must have been a lot because your to-do list is way shorter, but you don’t seem to remember doing any of it? Have I just entered a week-long fugue state? Anyways, drop your GBUs in the comments. I love you all almost as much as I love Fullhearted. Almost.
