Back in my college days, I took an honors course simply called “Spirtualism”. It wasn’t so much a class as it was a discussion between myself, the professor, and two other students. We’d talk about readings, artwork, music, thoughts, feelings, all of that. One exchange that always stuck with me was when everyone else described “spiritual” moments they had personally experienced. Special moments that helped them transcend or feel a type of “oneness”. Solitary walks in the woods, sunsets on the beach, a quiet, tranquil moment with a family member. When it was my turn, I had nothing to share.
I had never experienced, at least I don’t think, a “spiritual” moment. To this day, I don’t know if I ever have or ever will. It’s not something you can hold in your hand or see with your eyes. It’s something deep that, even for a brief moment, takes you beyond the self, beyond that which we know, and gives you a sense of self, of belonging, of, perhaps, even peace. Maybe one day I will have that moment. Until then, I’ll have to live vicariously through Mario Infantes’s new video “Away”.
