Hexrot – Formless Ruin of Oblivion (Transcending Obscurity Records) [Prog Death]
With their debut LP, Hexrot quickly throw listeners into the Bosch pit: monoliths of sludge jut through a shroud of shifting genres, and stability quickly becomes a distant memory. Influences from psychedelic black metal (Entropia comes to mind) to post-punk and OSDM intermingle, vanishing as quickly as they appear; the impression is of barely-controlled chaos, yet the clear, compact production from Colin M[‘]arston illuminates these myriad transitions. As with the surreal works of Hieronymus, experiencing Formless Ruin of Oblivion as a whole can be an overwhelming experience, but through close listening, a pathway opens through the pandemonium. Fittingly enough, a triptych of preview tracks is now available for streaming, but be wary—these unearthly delights are closer to a hedge maze than a garden. -Roldy
