Unmother play post-black metal for our post-truth present: a sound rife with droning melodies that envelop listeners in the paranoia of life in a police state. As the intro narration in “My Armor” disintegrates into blast beats, I’m reminded of the hypnotic work of Рожь (Rye), albeit in a cold, urban setting as opposed to remote forest. Electronic elements and a penchant for noise recall Ashenspire at their most experimental, and a sleazy punk underbelly is exposed around the 3-minute mark; from this point on, doom and DSBM intertwine as the composition shifts toward entropy. Come Friday, Ingsoc will need a double-plus good memory hole to disappear State Dependent Memory. -Roldy
