This Toilet Tuesday (6/26/18)
It’s Toilet Tuesday, and time again for your weekly overdose of new tunes. There’s a pretty interesting mix of styles in the list today, and we’ve picked out a few good ones for your enjoyment. Not a lot of big names, but some good stuff nonetheless.
The Antichrist Imperium – Volume II Every Tongue Shall Praise Satan (Apocalyptic Witchcraft) [Black Metal]
Listen to “The Dreadful Hosanna”
The Antichrist Imperium is part of a bigger family of projects, combining the talents of Akercocke drummer David Gray with his former guitarist companion Matt Wilcock and reunites them with Sam Bean from their The Berzerker days. Tagging along is Voices/Shrines vocalist and Akercocke newcomer Sam Loynes and if that line-up doesn’t give you boner, then let me tell you their blackened hyper-thrash death with a twist of lemon prog lives up to the expectations and their eponymous debut was largely built from parts intended for Akercocke’s sixth album that never was. Does then Volume II – Every Tongue Shall Praise Satan present a worthy follow-up? The answer is yes but with a no (or no but with a yes, if you will). It’s better on virtually every front. The most audible of which is how much better the album sounds, no more suffocating under the lack of space and dynamics. While there’s little to no stylistic change from the debut, the mission statement has somewhat been clarified and the influences better settled. The band seems to be in greater understanding of each other’s vision and working together better to make this record the Antichrist Imperium V2 where the number actually indicates an enhancement and improvement over original. 6/29/18 (Karhu)
Myrkvid – Demons Are Inside (Immortal Frost Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen
Black ‘n’ Roll is the name of the game, as Myrkvid make all too clear from the onset. Playing it nicely loose, they shift from rocking to thrashing to blasting with ease, while vocals alternate between growling and vomity rasping. I’m a bit reminded of Blodsrit’s Hinterland; more obvious connections are probably the big Scandinavian forebears of this particular blend of styles. Not exactly stellar, but rickety and rancid enough to inspire a healthy thirst for beer in me. 6/25/18 (Hans)
Exlibris – Innertia (Independent) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Gravity,” “Incarnate”
Proggy Polish power metal with the grandeur of Euro power and the riffs of American power? Fuck yes. The two songs available now are loaded with catchy melodies, sweet shreds, and some fantastic soaring vocals. The post production job is pretty solid (you can hear the bass doing cool bass stuff), and the band doesn’t share their peers’ proclivity for instrumental self-service (or do it a lot less, anyway). Exlibris look to provide some much needed succor in the current parched power metal landscape. 6/29/18 (Spear)
