Flush It Friday: Older, Budweiser

Share:

Cheers, mate.

Today just so happens to be my birthday. Maybe I’ll have more to say about birthdays next week, but since it is my birthday, and I get to do what I want with Flush It Fridays, all I want to do today is share with everyone perhaps the greatest paragraph written in the English language, which is, of course, the final paragraph from George Eliot’s Middlemarch:

Her finely touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

As a gift to me and to yourself, read that final clause one last time, which I am going to type again for the sheer joy of it all: “for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”

And, to be sure, things are not so ill with you and me, half owing to the contributors who live here in this Toilet, writing unvisited album reviews.

So let’s flush!
