Veilburner – Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy (Transcending Obscurity Records) [Prog Blackened Death]
The latest from Veilburner chases the twisted tail of last year’s dose of bizarre blackened death; while a release cycle this short usually spells disaster, these Pennsylvanian pariahs have tapped into a bottomless (un)wellspring of creativity. From the bellowing vocals in “That Which Crypts Howls Grandeur”—evocative of the Hellenic scene—to the psychedelic black of Entropia, influences are charred to ash and rearranged in novel forms. Every aspect of the band appears unbound from time: artwork that echoes Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Triumph of Death; classic rock leads; down-tuned, sludgy riffs to make Morbid Angel proud.
