This Toilet Tuesday (11/6/18)
New music! This Toilet Tuesday offers up a pretty solid selection of new releases from across the metal spectrum, and a lot of it is pretty nasty sounding; just the way we like it. We’ve picked out a few standouts for you, but there’s lots to be had in the big list this week. Let us know what we might have missed.
Thunderlung – Thunderlung (Independent) [Majestic Sludge]

I always forget how much I dig sludge until I come across a band that does it very well, and Thunderlung‘s debut is really doing it for me. These dudes know how to put together a riff, and the music carries this imposing, almost regal feeling to it that you don’t hear in many other bands of this sort. Couple that with a progressive edge and the emotional high of its ending and you’ve got a hell of a debut album. 11/4/18 (Spear)
Violent Night – Brave New Holocaust (Independent) [Thrash]

Old school thrash that doesn’t sound like it’s just aping everything from the 80’s, and not in the way that a lot of thrash revival bands sound like clones of each other. I don’t have a whole lot to say about this one, but it’s fast, it’s fun, and the solos are a whole lot better than I expected from them. Get on this if you want a speedy good time. 11/6/18 (Spear)
Curse Eternal – Antichristian Ceremonial Madness (Flesh Vessel) [Black Metal]

Do I need to say anything? With that title and art, you already know you wanna check this. I’ll give you that “Grave Desecration” and “The Sadist” would also work on a Nocturnal Graves album, but the sound already indicates that this is more along the lines of the recent first wave reverence of bands like Negative Plane and Malokarpatan. The ghoulish melodies and slower parts of “Beelzebub” and “I ❤ Transylvania” (fucking AOTY for that alone) set it further apart from genre standards by lending a bit of gothic flair, which puts it in the ballpark of Devil Master or Majestic Mass. Simultaneously, I’m reminded of Sodom’s earliest releases by the sloppy, violent playing and, sometimes, the vocal patterns. This really has it all, and it’s a rather beautiful mess. 11/5/18 (Hans)
