Dirge – Lost Empyrean (Debemur Morti Productions) [Sludge/Post-Metal]

I haven’t heard a note from Lost Empyrean, and I have been momentarily inconvenienced and so it must remain. But last couple of Dirge’s albums 10/10 DOOM/post-metal that kinda sounds like the band uses to play post-hardcore and just started to go slower and chip away all the excess, and eventually accommodated their fundamentals to their new habitat. Lost Empyrean probably would have made my AOTY list, had it come out before I was forced to submit. 12/14/18 (Karhu)

Of all the BDM (Big Dumb Merol™) this week, I declare this to be the biggest and dumbest. Don’t let the tasteful name and cover art fool you; it’s a glorious mess of blasting, stomping, and croaking. Remember that Chthe’ilist song with the snarling creatures in the intro? That’s how about half the vocals sound here, and it’s kinda fun. 12/10/18 (Hans)
