O undyed urinal, O palest privy, pare the pollution from our derrieres. This week we’ve got gator grooves, abysmal portmanteaus, and ungulate occultists. The bowl is shallow today, but don’t let the depth deceive you—within lies a smelly smorgasbord.
GRIND – Grace and Misery (7 Degrees Records) [Deathgrind / Post-Metal]
Grace and Misery is an apt description of GRIND’s second LP—muted piano and contemplative leads collapse into death metal riffing and caustic grind vocals without warning. “Texture” and “grindcore” are usually only mentioned together in the context of someone’s face being removed with 40 grit sandpaper, but lead singles “Leviathan” and “Hysteria” cover myriad styles in their short runtimes. From stomping hardcore and meloblack to delicate spoken word, these compositions showcase the band’s talent for balancing on the razor wire between incongruity and inspiration. Guessing what else Grace and Misery holds for listeners is surely a fool’s errand, so we’ll just need to have patience. Grind fans are known for that, right? -Roldy
