This Toilet Tuesday (12/19/17)
Welcome once again to Toilet Tuesday! It’s pretty slim pickings this week, but I’m cool with that; yesterday’s set of top 10’s reminded me of just how much shit I’d forgotten about, so a slower week is welcome. Hans and I have picked out a couple of noteworthy albums for your enjoyment; as usual, feel free to share your own down below.
Darkeater – Что помнит лес (Wolfspell Records) [Black Metal]

Depressive black metal leaning more on the side of Woods of Desolation than Xasthur, meaning it’s more dreamy-sad than suicidal-sad. Appropriately lo-fi instrumentation strums away forlornly in a relaxing stupor. The singer steps back entirely for long stretches of time. Both elements take a backseat to the ethereal, pearly synths that permeate every song, sometimes light on their feet, sometimes crawling right along with the rest, always wistful, always center stage. I don’t know if connoisseurs of the genre will be swept off their feet, but I’m pretty enthralled most of the time. 17/21/12 (Hans)
Mortiferum – Altar of Decay (Blood Harvest) [Death Metal]

Blood Harvest’s myriad releases saved this week from being a total bust as far as I’m concerned; of those, Mortiferum stands out as a grimy diamond in the rough. Altar of Decay sounds like Blood Incantation meets Demilich, and I don’t think I really need to say more than that. It’s slow and trudging at times, raging fast at others, and always filthy. It’s pure OSDM gold. 12/19/17 (Spear)
