This Toilet Tuesday (1/31/17)

Welcome once again to This Toilet Tuesday! W, Lacertilian, and I have gathered some music to distract you from the pit of increasingly absurd Orwellian nightmares the world continues to spiral into. Hit that list below for plenty of other great stuff; it’s a solid week overall. Enjoy!

ecferus worms

Palace of Worms/Ecferus – Palace of Worms/Ecferus (split- Crown and Throne/Tartarus/I, Voidhanger) [Death Metal/Black Metal]

Although various members of the Toilet heaped praises upon Palace of Worms’ The Ladder last year, the record, which deftly blended traces of death, doom, and dissonance together into a pleasingly occult package, the album sadly went a bit unnoticed. This hasn’t stopped sole member Balan from further refining his sound, though, as evident on the three tracks on this split. The songs are added further might with some gratuitous bottom-end reminiscent of the current surge of cavernous and weird death metal acts, and the nice lyrical touches that allude to Algernon and other progenitors of weird fiction only enhance the thematic development. It is Ecferus, with their blazing tremolo riffs and atavistic shrieks, that really seal the deal. The three Ecferus tracks on offer at the back hand of this split may be more orthodox, but the power of the riffs is undeniably compelling, especially when juxtaposed against unexpected hints of tribal drumming and oddly melodic leads. This split offers a delicious blend of some of the best things happening in extreme metal right now. FFO: Lorn, Hivelords, Blood Incantation 1/31/17 (W.)

Seven Kingdoms – Decennium (Nightmare Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Stargazer,” “Neverending”

Unleash the Archers had one of my favorite albums of 2015 with Time Stands Still, and it looks like Seven Kingdoms’ Decennium is going to hit the same high points for many of the same reasons. The riffs are absolutely ripping, the solos are glorious and triumphant, and the vocals are powerful and unique. Even if the rest of the album is only half as good as “Stargazer” and “Neverending,” Decennium is sure to be the leader of the power metal pack this year. 1/30/17 (Spear)

Bròn – Зарђала Круна (Independent) [Atmospheric Black Metal]

One man, one track, 32 minutes of bitter atmospheric black metal. Bròn, a solo project of Barshasketh front-man Krigeist, is back just 2 months after the release of his excellent full-length album Ànrach to offer us the next (and possibly last?) installment of black metal as majestic as it is melancholy. Melodies as pristine as pure driven snow mix with forlorn synth passages that serve to not only break up the frigid riffing but also deftly imbue the composition with a cryptic enchantment. As life in the boreal forest freezes over, the sky asserts its dominion, emblazoning a dancing aurora over the black firmament of night. (1/30/17) – Lacertilian.
