This Toilet Tuesday (2/2/16)
Welcome once again, friends, to This Toilet Tuesday. Karhu, W, and I have scraped the bowl this week for the chunkiest bits, and we found some diamonds beyond all the messy spatters and corny pieces. There’s plenty more to be had below, though, so let’s dig in and get this thing started.
Amoral – In Sequence (Imperial Cassette) [Prog Metal]
Listen to “Rude Awakening”
Amoral’s career has been full of jumps. From tech death to death n roll to power metal to prog. I’ve only recently become interested in the band, with their prog-ier output. In Sequence sees the return of Niko Kivelä as a third guitarist/second vocalist and while “Rude Awakening” is far from complex, it’s a damn catchy piece of melodic metal. 2/5/16 (Karhu)
Bosque – Beyond (Dunkelheit Produktionen) [Doom]
Stream
If you looked at that album cover and thought you were gazing upon a new Brooklyn black metal release, think again. Bosque play funeral doom of a contradictorily low fi and majestic fashion. Huge, booming riffs doled out alongside a cautious rhythm lead you ever higher up a mountain toward enlightenment. These 40 minutes are well worth the climb. FFO: Lord of the Abyss, This White Mountain, Ahab 2/1/16 (W.)
Sealclubber – Stoical (Medusa Crush Recordings) [Sludge]
Listen to “Vows of Silence”
If you can ignore the morally questionable band name and check out Sealclubber, you’ll find sludge of a decidedly righteous quality. Crushing, percussive riffs glower like storm clouds over an eruption of surprisingly melodic and emotive instrumental passages. I’m very excited to see where the rest of this release goes. FFO: The Lion’s Daughter, Opium Lord, Order of Orias 2/5/16 (W.)
Obscura – Akróasis (Relapse Records) [Progressive Tech Death]
Listen to “Sermon of the Seven Suns,” “Akróasis,” “The Monist,” “Ten Sephiroth,” “Ode to the Sun”
It has been far too long since Obscura graced us with a new album, but not surprising given the departure of Christian Muenzner and Hannes Grossmann. Fortunately, that hasn’t negatively impacted their sound in the least, having found suitable replacements in Tom Geldshlager and Sebastian Lanser. The most immediately noticeable aspect of Akróasis is the fretless guitar, which adds an off-kilter quality to some of the riffs and leads to some unbelievable solos. What gets me the most though is the stylistic shift. The absence of the former guitarist and drummer is apparent, but this has only opened new doors for the band. I forsee Akróasis being a game changer for the world of tech death; there are sure to be many imitators, but few will come close to this. 2/5/16 (Spear)
