This Toilet Tuesday (3/13/18)
Welcome once more to This Toilet Tuesday! You know the drill by now: new music comes out and we highlight stuff that probably doesn’t suck. Hans and Bert Banana have a couple for you today; let us know if there’s anything we might have missed otherwise.
RazorRape – Stripped to Kill (Rotten Roll Rex) [Deathgrind]
Listen to “Crawling in the Sewers,” “Face Removal Machine”
What can I say, I can’t resist a dumb band name. Gotta hand it to them though, they took me back to the first time I heard a song from Exhumed and immediately wanted more of those guttural vocals. That’s who they kinda remind me of in terms of production, but they’re more like Inhume or maybe Last Days of Humanity in terms of over-the-top brutality and straightforwardness. I had a goodhearted chuckle at the ridiculousness of it all (which they seem pretty aware of) and look forward to a full spin. 3/12/18 (Hans)
Monotheist – Scourge (Prosthetic Records) [Tech Death]
Listen
A fairly interesting release. Best way to describe it is its a death metal record with progressive elements. Don’t let the Tech Death tag fool you- you’re not going to get that over the top sound like from a band like Archspire. You’re looking at a mix of Suffocation and Mithras with a sprinkle of Death. There were a few instances during the playthrough of the available tracks where the Suffocation influence is super apparent. The progressive elements have a nice spacey vibe to them…which is likely why I drew the Mithras comparison. The production is really clean, so the arrangements stand out rather nicely. Of the available tracks, “Mark of the Beast II” will give you more of that 90’s tech death vibe while “Scourge” will give you more of that proggy tech death vibe. Overall, it’s interesting enough to look forward to the full release. Bobby Koelble (Death) makes an appearance on one of the unreleased tracks, so there’s a little more incentive to check it out. 3/16/18 (Bert Banana)
Pestilent Reign – Pyres (Rising Nemesis Records) [Tech Death]
Listen to “Martyr,” “Gutter’s Filth”
On the other side of the spectrum, Pestilent Reign bring that straight forward Brutal Tech Death. You get your “tweedled-deedle” guitars and blistering blast beats. The song “Gutter’s Filth” has a siqqq breakdown which is a big plus. They do incorporate lots of grooves. More so apparent in the song “Martyr” that “Gutter’s Filth” but the latter’s solo is super groovy, but there’s enough grooves to say there’s a Lamb of God influence here. Vocals are a little on the cleaner side, so don’t expect any dank ass gutturals. Production is rather clean as well. If you’re looking for something to just bang your head to and maybe kill time while on your commute while stuck in traffic, this album will likely satisfy you. 3/16/18 (Bert Banana)
