Akantophis – Erneuerung (Independent) [Blackened Death / Dissoblack / Post-Metal]
Erneuerung was recorded live and preserves in amber the intensity and imperfections that make shows special. The project’s dissoblack backbone serves as scaffolding for a slew of influences: the eerie, ringing quality of Yellow Eyes intertwines with Klabautamann‘s post-rock sensibilities for a sound at once lush and nightmarish. Dispassionate clean vocals in the vein of Tom G. Warrior add a gothic flair to the album, and the rhythm section—never far from a disco beat or mid-pace double bass—calls to mind The Pagan Prosperity-era Old Man’s Child. (Galder would definitely creepysmile while listening.) The decades between the band’s inception in 2003 and the release of this debut LP saw metal genres evolve in numerous ways, but Akantophis has remained true to their convictions, resulting in a vital and imminently re-playable record. -Roldy
