This Toilet Tuesday (4/20/21)
It’s Toilet Tuesday, we’re a month into spring here in the northern hemisphere, and the new releases are as explosive as the new vegetation. There’s so goddamn much of it; if you can’t find something you enjoy this week, you’re not looking hard enough. Check out Hans’s highlights, dig through that list for some goodies, and tell us what you’re jamming today.
Death Chamber – Experiments In Warfare (Dead Center) [Death Metal]
Listen to “The Inevitable,” “Dead End Witness”
Is it just me or does the premise “death metal about war” set up certain expectations for everyone? You know, probably HM-2 sound, probably some Bolt Thrower influence or something, probably a singer sounding like Martin van Drunen. Well, this one surprised me by being one of those war-themed records that aims to capture the subject matter with ridiculous levels of intensity. It’s not quite Panzer Division Marduk levels of non-stop blasting, but the two available tracks sure offer little in the way of respite. The war metal tag feels somewhat justified, except that this doesn’t fucking suck – they find the time to throw a couple of good riffs into the fray and, much to my delight, seem pretty fond of d-beats. I could do without the incessant hiss of the cymbals, but otherwise, this promises to be a nicely cathartic experience. 4/23/21 (Hans)
Akiavel – Vae Victis (Independent) [Melodic Death Metal]
Listen to “Frozen Beauties,” “Pentagram Tattoo”
With the song titles and that intro, I was expecting this to veer off into Napalm Records territory at any point. That doesn’t happen, but neither does the band shy away from incorporating a dash of the modern stylings of groove metal. It’s never enough to really dilute the solid core of death metal, but always spices up the songwriting in interesting ways. If you don’t dig the pace and melody of the first track, check out “Pentagram Tattoo” nonetheless; it’s more in-your-face and nicely displays the heft of the clean-cut production. 4/23/21 (Hans)
