This Toilet Tuesday (4/28/15)
Greetings and welcome to another round of new releases! I’ve decided to spare you tales of gory shits today, so you’re safe to eat while reading this. This has been an excellent year thus far for metal, and this week does not disappoint. As usual, the Toilet faithful (now with 100% more Link Leonhart!) have gathered their picks for you to ruthlessly pick apart in the comments get you through the long week ahead. Enjoy!
Öxxö Xööx – Nämïdäë (Blood Music) [Dark Metal]
Listen to “Äbÿm”
Öxxö Xööx, everybody’s favorite extravagant, flamboyant, avant-doom band is here again. And damn, does Nämïdäë sound good. Black metal, sympho-electronic gothica and harpischords are combined to a damn near flawless masterpiece once again and Rïcïnn is still the only operatic metal vocalist who doesn’t suck and blow at the same time. (Karhu)
Monolord – Vænir (Riding Easy Records) [Doom]
Stream
I always thought that Doom Metal is one of the hardest style to pull off in a good fashion. Monolord are Swedish maestros of the fuzz magic and they Doom and gloom in the right way. The music is introspective, with a high emphasis of a muddy and liquid atmosphere. The compositions are long, but it’s a pleasant ride. There’s crunchy bass sided with straight-forward drumming, accompanying the ethereal voice and the monolithic riffs. Think of this record as a lonely journey in a mythical oceanic city to discover your own self. I know this will be in a couple of doom year-end lists, because this is quality music. (Link Leonhart)
Atara – The Worst is Yet to Come (MoodisordeR Prod) [Blackgrind]
Stream
Do you remember watching Fantasia as a kid and getting scared crapless by the Chernabog demon during the Night on Bald Mountain sequence? Okay, picture that demon, but a lot faster and totally swoll. Now picture him rampaging through your home town, crushing everything under foot as he punches into buildings and unleashes hordes of skeletons to flay the skins of the living. This is the sound Atara conjures on The Worst Is Yet to Come. FFO: Bastard Feast, Anaal Nathrakh, Cara Neir (W.)
Blurring – Blurring (Independent) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Terminus and the Wing,” “The Devil I Know”
Skronk skronk. Blast blast blast. Atmospheric riff. Skronk. Blast blast. Crunch crunch crunch. Shriek shriek. Rinse. Repeat. Oh, Danny Lilker is involved too. FFO: Piss Vortex, Oblivionized, God Mother (W.)
Bell Witch – Four Phantoms (Profound Lore) [Doom]
Stream
I always thought Bell Witch’s debut album, Longing, was overlooked a bit by doom enthusiasts. It wasn’t a perfect album by any means as it seemed to get lost within itself and ramble a bit, but it showed promise. Their follow up, Four Phantoms, delivers on that promise and then some. It might be a bit strange to call an album with two 20 minute tracks “focused”, but it certainly feels that way. Every whisper, every wail, and every bombast feels like it was painstakingly arranged for maximum sorrow and listener attention. If you like your doom glacial and depressing, here is your album of the year. (Leif Bearikson)
Dawn of Azazel – The Tides of Damocles (Independent) [Death Metal]
Stream
If you like your death metal chaotic and violent, then this is your album. The Tides of Damocles is incredibly punishing, tying you to the breaking wheel and pummeling you with a flurry of harsh chords and blastbeats. The slow sections offer no reprieve, only serving to amplify the madness. It’s torturous, and you will be addicted. (Spear)
