This Toilet Tuesday (6/2/15)
Welcome to another Toilet Tuesday! It’s the first week of the summer months, which means I’ll be cranking the AC and shutting all the curtains to preserve the cave-like atmosphere that permeates my house. Fortunately for you, my aversion to sunlight means I’ll have that much more time digging up the tastiest jams each week. Our ever-faithful and handsome team of writers have picked their favorite (and one really bizarre) new releases of the week, so sit back and enjoy the new tunes!
Encyrcle – Encyrcle (Unspeakable Axe Records) [Speed Metal]
Stream
Speed freaks unite. Encyrcle is here to give you your fix of high octane riffs, breakneck solos, and choruses that will stick in your skull like a carnivorous earwig. I recently told the Masterlord that “Bloodbasker” has become my go-to song for murdering random video game plebeians and he couldn’t help but agree. Equip your denim vest and grab a brewski while you windmill to these tasty jams. (Leif Bearikson)
Maruta – Remain Dystopian (Relapse Records) [Grindcore]
Stream
It seems as though each month we’re given a grind gem of some sort, be it from the underground or the grandfathers of the genre. This month the torch has been passed to Maruta, and I’ll be damned if they don’t just run it to the Olympic cauldron themselves. This isn’t just your typical grind, though, as Maruta is kind enough to find the time to incorporate a little death and, dare I say, skronk? Hell, it has Tomas Lindberg and J.R.Hayes’ seals of approval so what more do you need? (Leif Bearikson)
Monolithian – The Finest Day I Ever Lived Was When Tomorrow Never Came (Atomsmasher Records) [Doom]
Stream
Monolithian’s The Finest Day I Ever Lived, Was When Tomorrow Never Came sounds like bar music written for illuminati cultists. Due to essentially existing as a solely rhythm unit (no guitars here, folks), the band’s rumbling Motorhead meets Thou approach would be frightening if it wasn’t so dang rocking. I must give a special tip-o-the-beard to vocalist Simon; his leathery throat matches the music perfectly. Get drunk and damned. FFO: Snakefeast, Orange Goblin, Radiation Blackbody (W.)
Ebonillumini – Arktos (Wickerman Recordings) [Experimental Black Metal]
Listen to “Lusca (Bahamas)”
Well, this is certainly something. Within the first two minutes of “Lusca”, Eboniilumini transition from a Red Stripe commercial jingle to a Godzilla roar to cooing lady-led black metal. I don’t think I like this, but it’s just so out there that I figured someone needed to cover it. Look, I don’t really know how to describe this, so just give it a try. You probably won’t like it either, but at least you’ll be able to say you’ve jammed the weirdest release of the day. FFO: The Meads of Asphodel, Within Temptation, Alestorm (W.)
Paradise Lost – The Plague Within (Century Media) [Doom]
Listen to “Beneath Broken Earth”
The guys from Paradise Lost return once again to explore darkness with their own mix of doom and melodic goodness. The Plague Within is a great album in which the instruments curls between them to develop a more song-oriented experience with a tight rhythm segment. Paradise Lost managed to make an album in which they throw into an old warehouse aspects and soundscapes from all their previous incarnations: The Plague Within is a mix between doom, gothic, heavy and even death metal all in one English-flavored package. Truth Before Treason – The Rise and Fall of a Broken Empire (Independent) [Metalcore]
Listen to “Live This Down”
Full disclosure: I’m a sucker for anything that sounds like Trivium, so my fellow Eau Claire dwellers Truth Before Treason had me snared from the start. The Rise and Fall of a Broken Empire sounds like a more palatable Ascendancy-era Trivium, brimming with wicked guitarmonies and bouncy chugging riffs. My only complaint is that the vocalist/lead guitarist sounds a little strained at the high end of his range, but he more than makes up for it with his fantastic guitar work. If your tastes lie anywhere in the -core persuasion, don’t miss this. (Spear)
