Welcome to This Toilet Tuesday, where the new music flows like milk and honey. Hans and I drank deeply of these sweet rivers, and we have returned to offer you a small taste of what is to be found today. For real, this is a pretty damn good week; check out that list for way more stuff than we were able to cover up here.

Abduction – A Crown of Curses (Death Kvlt Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen

Ever since hearing that weird-ass Kuxan Suum song released on Black Twilight, I’ve been looking for psychedelic black metal that really goes nuts with the concept, so I am very happy today. Doubly so because these folks throw in other good stuff: the pleasantly numbing monotony of Sun Worhsip, Fell Voices, et al, and melancholy, subtle synths from DSBM. The cold, buzzing guitars and the heavily distorted and reverb-y vocals make one think of Darkspace, but the cosmic atmosphere comes not from scientific rationale but rather from a “Hawkwind on a REALLY bad acid trip realising everything is futile” sort of angle. 7/20/18 (Hans)

Finnr’s Cane – Elegy (Prophecy Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen

“Strange Sun” is the only of the three tracks that I would call black metal without much of a second thought, and even that doesn’t stick to one niche, oscillating between various atmospheric approaches and the claustrophobia of Thantifaxath, all the while employing a tremendous wall of sound. “Willow” does open with a sad tremolo riff, yes, but suddenly breaks into a stoner doom riff and decides to trip out for a good while; after that, all bets are off as to what I’d call it. “Elegy” is straight up funeral doom, albeit the most entertaining I’ve heard so far, that makes great use of dynamic range; when that really quiet part comes in, it makes the part before it seem like a train just passed right in front of you. 7/20/18 (Hans)

Skeletonwitch – Devouring Radiant Light (Prosthetic Records) [Black Thrash]
Listen

Much ado has been made of the new direction Skeletonwitch has been heading lately; the newer, blacker sound has been off-putting to some (not to mention the wieners that keep whining about the vocals). I, for one, welcome our new black metal overlords. While it’s certainly different, they haven’t let go of the core of their sound at all- they’re just approaching it from a different angle. “When Paradise Fades” alone should be proof enough of that. The ‘Witch haven’t lost a step, and Devouring Radiant Light is shaping up to be beast. 7/20/18 (Spear)
