Welcome once again to that most magical day of the week, This Toilet Tuesday! And it’s a gross one today; lots of black and death metal is landing this week, and a fair amount of it is worth a listen. As usual, Hans and I have a couple particularly greasy jewels for you to check out that might strike your fancy. Get you some jams.

Bloodsoaked Necrovoid – Demo 1 (Caligari Records) [Cave Death]
Stream

With a name like Bloodsoaked Necrovoid, you know you’re in for either some kvlt as fvkk black metal tracked on a Nokia 3310 mic or filthy death metal that sounds like it was conceived, written, and recorded in a septic tank. It’s the latter in this case; musically speaking, there are strong odors of Incantation and Grave Upheaval throughout the demo’s short run. Tonally speaking, it sounds like they managed to actually craft amps out of shit. Certainly not for everyone, but it’s great if you want something short and unabashedly disgusting. 7/24/18 (Spear)

Shed the Skin – We of Scorn (Hells Headbangers) [Melodeath Metal]
Listen

With the amount of dull, trite melodic death metal floating around still stuck in 2004, it’s nice to hear some every now and then that doesn’t skimp on the “death” part. Shed the Skin is just such a band, delivering their brand of melodic but beefy death metal with the same fervor as bands like Carcass and Pile of Priests. In terms of sound, it’s pretty unique; it feels like a new take on an old sound, something more than an homage to the past. It’s hard to put into words, so give it a listen and see what I mean. 7/27/18 (Spear)

Cancer – Into the Heartless Silence (Throats Productions) [DSBM]
Listen

This is a far cry from what I imagine when I hear the term DSBM. No murky, navel-gazing meanderings from a despondent basement dweller; instead, Cancer seem to come with a more worldly perspective, informed by the coldness and dissonance of the outside world. Starting with that foundation, they seek out the melancholy and darkness that hides in the folds of everyday life, and proceed to explore those folds like a tongue feeling for a missing tooth. While the result is mostly sad, the sadness is expressed more in an atmospheric, dare I say blackgaze-ish feeling that juxtaposes a cold “outside” with a wistful warmth found “inside.” 7/28/18 (Hans)
