It’s Toilet Tuesday once more, and holy shit, this is a lot of music. Hans, Karhu, Lacertilian, and I have all picked out a plethora of new tunes for you to check out. As always, be sure to let us know if we missed anything good.

No/Más – Last Laugh (HPGD Productions) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Claustrophobia”

Extremely thicc sound, leaning pretty strongly towards death metal. If it doesn’t blast, it grooves. Guttural vocals mixed with demented shrieks. Drummer seems to be quite the beast, too; those fills right at the beginning are insane. I’m pretty sure that’s a monkey on the cover, so I’m gonna choose to believe it’s Andross and this is a Starfox concept album. I have high hopes for this one. 8/30/19 (Hans)

Sempiternal Dusk – Cenotaph of Defectuous Creation (Dark Descent) [Death Metal]
Listen

Primitive death doom with long-ass songs, largely played in mid tempo does not necessarily sound like a recipe for greatness or longevity, but five years into the game and Sempiternal Dusk’s debut is still making rounds. And there’s finally a follow-up. Some of the murkiness of the debut has been changed for sharper tones, laying more weight on those chugs but much of its atmosphere remains. Whether this’ll last as well remains to be seen, but Cenotaph of Defectuous Creation comes with hefty promises. 8/30/19 (Karhu)

Orm – Ir (Indisciplinarian) [Black Metal]
Preview

Having barely listened to any black metal in 2019 (not through lack of trying), I was quite surprised by Orm‘s two-track 45+ minute album Ir. At first because I’d conflated their 2017 self-titled album with that of a similarly Girardi’d doom record from the same year. And after the introductory volume swells I was greeted with strident blackened melody rather than the sedated single-chord riffing I’d been anticipating to follow such an epic opening. For the next 40-odd minutes Orm outlayed some highly dynamic and engaging passages of melancholic mania, atmospheric acoustics, and tremolo tumult, all imbued with a stylish grandeur yet played with an unpolished organic tone. FFO: Havukruunu, Belliciste, Wiegedood 8/30/19 (Lacertilian)

Keys of Orthanc – A Battle in the Dark Lands of the Eye… (Naturmacht Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen

Epic black metal drawing inspiration from Tolkien is not a novel idea, but Keys of Orthanc are no followers of the Summoning cult. Being first and foremost a black metal band, their compositions are riff-based, guitarwork twindling and sneaking its way around the relatively grandiose scope which also means that not every moment is spent trying to out-evil everyone else, or dwelling in the darkest depths. And though the chants and keys (as in the musical instrument, not the door opening objects) do make appearances, their use emphasizes rather than directs. Keys of Orthanc (which I presume is a reference to the door opening objects and not the musical instruments, due to the relative lack of presence of said musical instruments) makes a good impression with their sophomore. 8/31/19 (Karhu)

Tenebrae in Perpetuum – Anorexia obscura (Debemur Morti Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen

A decade’s silence has ended, and Atratus’ monstrous Tenebrae In Perpetuum has ascended once more among the crowds of men. Though sprouting still from the frozen soil that once lent its nutrients for the second-wave’s most immaculate riffing, TiP is every bit as reminiscent of BAN’s halfway industrial works as it is of the genre’s pioneers. Which is to say, not too much. ‘Neath Chimiscrin’s often mechanistic performance on drums and Atratus’ unhinged vocals, the razor sharp riffs are met with dives toward dissonance and plentiful electronics that warp and bend the songs towards both dark psychedelia and desolate industrial landscapes. 8/30/19 (Karhu)

Warcrab – Damned in Endless Night (Transcending Obscurity) [Sludge/Death Metal]
Listen

I typically like a little more brains in my listening, but there’s something wonderfully pure about a band called Warcrab playing big, dumb, sludgy death metal. Nothing pretentious, nothing fancy—just tons of riffs topped with grimy vocals and underscored with driving percussion. It’s simple and to the point, but very, very satisfying. “Kraken Arise” alone is worth the entry price; don’t sleep on this one. 8/30/19 (Spear)
