This week, we’ve got 2Fast2Pocalypse, iniquity (but too much), and a meaty deity. As the leaves and turds begin to fall—after all, today is the first day of Autumn—we can’t help but be inundated with riches. From industrial black metal to prog sludge, there’s a stool sample for everyone in the Bowl today. Get to it!
Ordeathral – Medea (Independent) [Symphonic Meloblack / Folk Metal]
I can’t say I expected to find a French band writing a concept album about a figure of Greek mythology; then again, we have white dudes in metal LARPing as samurai all the time, so it’s not too odd. With Medea, Ordeathral returns from a decade-long hiatus with a tale of mortal revenge, scored to a capricious mix of melodic black metal, technical riffing, and dense orchestration; the resulting sound sits somewhere between Carach Angren (sans edge) and Dalriada‘s extreme folk metal. While I’m usually a hater of synth orchestras, I’ll have to eat crow here, as its inclusion elevates—rather than suffocates—the songwriting. (Turns out it’s not the sonic profile, but rather the standard “plinking around like you discovered you had hands 5 minutes ago” thing that makes me want to rip my feathers out.) The various woodwinds, strings and pianos, woven through thrashing rhythms and blast beats, transport listeners to distant climes; somewhere over the horizon, a mystical land (called Friday) awaits. -Roldy
