Lamentations – Passion of Depression (Willowtip) [Progressive Death Metal]

Lamentations is not the type of progressive death metal band that’s out to bend your mind with crazy song structures and hyper-technical playing. For all their flashy instrumental work, the real prog nature of this album (and its main draw) is in their note choice and wide range of texture. As one could surmise from its title, Passion of Depression is a deeply emotional album, expressed through bittersweet melodies in the guitars and the occasional spot of clean singing, brought together and supplemented by a variety of synth voices. It’s a very strong record that plays to some of the best aspects of melodic death metal, and I can’t recommend it enough. 11/11/22 (Spear)
