Track Premiere: Veilburner‘s “Golgothic Holocaust”
As he looked down from Golgotha, pinned like a specimen for all to inspect, could he have known millions would die in his name? Could he have seen the fate of emotions leached from the faces of his flock, bottled away to fester and erupt in great acts of violence—both physical and mental—through the centuries? The fallout from Jesus’ crucifixion comes under the microscope in Veilburner‘s “Golgothic Holocaust,” a musical torch held to the Shroud of Turin. Tune in below for the exclusive premiere:
For the vast majority of the last 12 years, Veilburner has proven to be both weird and weirdly prolific; judging by the available songs from All That Glimmers is Gloam, their trajectory looks to continue unimpeded by such roadblocks as time and sanity. “Golgothic Holocaust” begins with a descent into pandemonium, where the faltering tones of Suffering Hour and blackened death tremolos whirl like a corrupted carousel. As dispassionate vocals—echoing Barney Greenway of Napalm Death—intone “As I stand before you / An epitaph of the self,” and trumpets shout their rusted fanfare, the atmosphere becomes suffocating in its density; thankfully, a sliver of reprieve is granted by slower tempos in these moments, along with the specter of camp emerging from King Diamond-coded falsettos. As the track’s churning comes to an end, listeners are left precisely where they started: wandering over unstable ground, approaching an unknowable threshold. I intend to take such experiences as this music with me when I go, no matter the potential cost.
