Dwellers in the Bowl, Dumplings from beyond the wall of sleep, raise your pumpkin spice lattes to the sky. The spookiest time of year is upon us, and with that, a steaming crop of new releases—eclectic, septic, and dyspeptic. This week we’ve got concrete shoes, apology metal, and wascally wampyrs. There’s a lot to chew on (more than just brains!), so get in there and let us know what we missed!
Back from Death – Enslaving the Dead (Independent) [Death]
Ahh, to be wrenched from the grave by the writhing tendrils of an eldritch puppeteer, for the sole purpose of ignominious deeds—what an honor! Alas, such events are unlikely to occur in the USA before November 5th; in the meantime, we have Back from Death’s debut LP, Enslaving the Dead. From bursts of deathgrind blasting to groove metal octave chords, preview track “Metropolitan” covers much unhallowed ground in under three minutes. The use of intentional dead notes adds a noise rock edge to the mix, and somebody in the band must’ve obtained the Papyrus Containing the Spell to Disgorge Karl Sanders’ Phrygian Lead Style for all the Nile influence in the song’s final moments. I’m (or is it the appendage slithering in my spinal fluid?) curious to check in later this week to see if the rest of the album will focus on short, grindy numbers or feature more expansive tracks. -Roldy
