TAG DIVING: GORE

Violence is Italian art!

Felicitations stinkers, and welcome back to Tag Diving! It’s the weekly column where I, the food waste-weathered Reliquary Tower, sort through the occult offerings of Bandcamp, much like one might root through a rusty dumpster looking for a fancy new wig that just needs a quick hair transplant. Today’s subject is gore and lemme tell ya, my ears are still bleeding. Let’s take a look around, shall we?

MULL The Sound of Melting Gristle

Burpy gurgly goregrind is out in full force this week (I don’t know why I was surprised, I really shouldn’t have been), and Mull are honestly some of the better stuff I’ve heard. This entire album is oozing with riffs, fun and oddly danceable ones at that. Mull are pretty new to the scene, and with such a solid debut, I’ll be keeping an eye on them, and if you’re into this stuff, so should you.

Cystic EmbalmmentBardassage Auditif

I don’t think it’s just because of the album artwork, but this record really reminds me of Repulsion. Most of the riffs are simple, catchy, and repetitive, and they all have that hardcore edge to them. The vocals are pretty tolerable as far as pukey goregrind goes, but honestly my favorite parts are when they switch from them to the more straightforward harshes. Either way though, it’s a fun album with a couple of songs that got stuck in my head during work yesterday!

Organ FailureNeurologic Determination of Death

I love a good “Oops! All distortion!” bass tone, and this release has plenty of it. Nice pingy snares, nice grindy riffs, super solid vocals, and it features Ryan Reynolds’s from Nucleus (who absolutely rule, by the way). I’ll probably grab a tape for this one if I can find it on Discogs. All in all, super solid, and at only 15 minutes, well worth your time.

Ever hear those stories about how a bunch of different animals keep evolving into crabs? I feel like that’s been happening a lot lately with this column, except instead of crabs it’s goregrind. We’ll see if we end up with a little more variety next week, when I’ll be back with some Halloween-themed tunes!
