Flush it Friday: Fest 24 in the Books

Fucking enough with Descendents merch, y’all

Fest 24 was a celebration. It began with what ended up being a private screening of American Hardcore at the Hipp on Thursday night and ended with me all teary-eyed during “Dull” by Samiam on Sunday at sunset. Friday involved Fenix TX (yes, that’s right!), Home Front (the best punk band on the planet right now), Algernon Cadwallader (what a beard!), a terrible comedy show (with little to fault to most of the comics on the late-night bill, especially headliner and Florida’s own Allen Strickland Williams), and the set of the day from LA’s Quiet Fear at Palomino Pool Hall.

Saturday was a whirlwind. Hey Mercedes in the afternoon, selling the only two shirts you’d ever recognize; catching sick Texas hardcore band Anchorite at Bazaar 47 after the vocalist handed me a flyer ‘cause of my American Nightmare hoodie; Gillian Carter stunning everyone despite tuning issues; Small Brown Bike playing 2001’s Dead Reckoning; Iron Reagan playing at such a volume that a speaker on the ceiling of Vivid starting pouring smoke; Steve Brooks with a full head of hair and Torche mixing “Scimitar” into their best set in years; and Texas is the Reason playing the set of the weekend.

Sunday was a short, beautiful day. It began with truly great comedy from Kate Willet, the truly nuts John F. O’Donnell, Abe Gatling and his incredible impression of “A Suicidal 90s Def Jam Comic,” Brandie Posey, and the near-perfect Dave Ross before heading to Bo Diddley Plaza for another round of vegan dogs courtesy of Nah Dogs and back-to-back-to-back sets from Nerf Herder, Sparta, and the aforementioned Samiam. Nerf Herder had everyone dying over classics like “I Only Eat Candy,” but Sparta truly wowed me. A new album?! When At the Drive-In split, I was wrong about who was better.

And not a single Dead Kennedys shirt spotted all weekend long. What a world. Let’s Flush!
