Starting the week off right with a meditation on pain and suffering.

Unflesh is a name likely familiar to tech death fans; they had an impressive showing with their 2016 EP Transcendence to Eternal Obscurity, and the followup, Savior, was one of the best works of melodic tech death in 2018. If you haven’t heard it, you can catch yourself up on it here (it’s definitely worth a few listens), but I wouldn’t worry too much; what we’ve got in store for you today is going to feel new to established fans as well. “Amongst Horrors Must I Dwell” is the second single from their upcoming album, Inhumation, and it shows a very different side of the band than what you might expect. Says the band:

“Amongst Horrors Must I Dwell” is a song that deals with pain and suffering. This song is at the middle to later point of the album where the process of desensitization has almost taken full hold over the individual. It also depicts this being having to forge ahead on this process of desensitization through pain and suffering at all costs. At the completion of the track the individual is now devoid of any pain.”

As you can hear, the virtuosic side of the band is still present, but it’s been heavily dialed back in favor of atmosphere and melody. Its opening acoustic line morphs into a swaying melody topped with icy vocals and underscored with an emotive bassline and a driving but reserved drum line. Even as the song picks up in pace, that emotive core remains intact; even the solo, which is insanely shreddy even by tech death standards, has a ton of soul and personality.

Inhumation will be out on Friday, April 2nd, available on Bandcamp. Be sure to follow Unflesh on Facebook for more updates, and check out the previous single, “To Renounce Flesh and Blood” as well.
