Riff Of The Week: Bass Edition
Bottom-end belters from Sadus, Ripper, Iced Earth, Om, Dark Fortress, and The Who. Vote for your fave.
Before we get chonk’d, let’s take a look at the results from last week’s Head Spin Edition. Look, don’t worry about what the graph below says, the Spin Doctors won, ok? Good.
This week we asked for bass riffs
Here’s what you sent in…

Dark Fortress – “Insomnia” (Riff @ 4:17)
I’ve submitted a riff from this song before, and I’ll sure as fuck submit a riff from this song in the future.
As far as I’m concerned, “Insomnia” is a perfect song. Every single riff slays, and the bass solo toward the end is no exception. Who woulda thunk that adding a jazz influenced bass piece into black metal song would be so satisfying? Dark Fortress, that’s who. Listen, and hear why they are the most underrated black metal band in existence.

Iced Earth – ‘Damien’ (Riff @ 0:00)
Steve Di Giorgio’s work on Horror Show is tremendous, and non moreso than the evil-sounding bass intro to Damien. Starts at 0:00.
Hans
Aesop Rock – ‘Molecules’ (Riff @ 0:44)
Yes y’all, the crestfallen, care-worn
Air horn air horn air horn air horn
Hey, its the former JJD. Here’s my riff choice.
The Who – ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’
This is the greatest bass solo ever. From 1:45 to 1:55 you have the absolute pinnacle of electric rock bass
Iron Goddess of Mercy
Om – “On the Mountain at Dawn” (Riff @ 1:29)
Thought I: I’m back after a week of lettin’ someone else get last-ass place / Thought II: I always biff it when I should just submit an Om riff, so here we are / Thought III: Slugdge is gonna win this week, anyways (or that new Ripper!) / Thought IV: Has there ever been a more appropriately titled album? / Thought V: BASS! Totally whizzed out – Bass fishin’ with my motherfuckin’ son.

Sadus- ‘Unreality’ (Riff @ 0:38)
There is a metric fuckton of badass bass riffs in metal and several shitloads of those are by Steve DiGiorgio.
Lacertilian
Ripper – ‘Sensory Stagnation’ (Riff @ 1:30)
Sadly most people will think of bass solos when asked for their fave bass riffs, and many will recall the odd amazing guitar riff adorned with prominent bass farts. However, it’s far less often that you remember an insane bass riff underneath a relatively innocuous guitar riff.
