Riff ov the Week: Demo Edition

I don’t have the time for small talk.

Last week, Mother Shabubu won the comment free-for-all with a solid Judas Priest cut. Send your address to toiletovhellriff@gmail.com for your special prize.

Next week:

  • Normal riffs.
  • Send your normal riffs to toiletovhellriff@gmail.com. Include your name, a link to the song, the time of the riff, and an explanation.
  • If you have an idea for a theme, let me know.
  • Okay

Not exactly an EP from the deepest darkest depths of metal history, as Plague Prophecy just came out in 2014… But rocking out to Extinction A.D.‘s first full-length album, Faithkiller, brought last year’s EP to mind. Thrashy, thrashy goodness. The whole tune’s good but I love the time change into the riff at 1:26.

Ted Nü-Djent

Yep, I’m submitting another Black Breath song. Big whoop, wanna fight about it? From their debut EP Razor to Oblivion. Riff starts to build from 1:11 until it kicks in at about 1:28 by which the riff sequence runs for about 1 minute. The real hook of the riff sequence at 1:55 and again at 2:25 = pickle tickled.

It took me a while to “get” DsO, but lately I’ve been on a binge. I just copped the Drought EP a couple of weeks ago, and I think the riff that starts at 2:18 is the highlight.

The second verse (0:38) is odd and not Kvelertak-y at all, but it carries a heavier feel to it than most other releases form the band. Pluss, who can hate Kvelertak? [Me. — Masterlord]

0:00. Spiritual desolation triple-distilled into its purest sonic form. The best way to absorb this riff is to do so alone, lying prostrate on the floor–preferably low carpet that hasn’t been vacuumed in at least two months and is composed of about 68% cat hair. It’s also best to do it while there’s still some low daylight left, with a light buzz on.

Boss the Ross

00:34. Melvins. All that needs to be said. King Buzzo is a riff king and its hard to pick just one from War on Wisdom but I will go with the one starting at 00:34. It’s an odd one but catchy as hell. Oh, and do yourself a favor, watch the whole video.

This was a tough decision to make, choosing between this track or ‘Bound By Desire’. Does it really matter? Either way, this EP is one of my favourite of all time. Riff starts when you stab play.

Rotting Christ have been at it for almost too long. Dudes started out playing grindcore-ish short songs on a stolen guitar, and then went on to become legends of Greek black metal in their own right. This demo, released in 1989, is filled with Celtic Frost/Sarcófago worship, but also hints at what would become their future… The riff that comes in at 1:55 and then back again on 2:25 on track “Hills Of Crucifixion” is particularly gnarly.

No idea what this week’s submission thingy is, but here we go! For an uncensored video, I was expecting something more NSFW. Riff starts at 1:54, amongst much delightful Abraham Lincoln wienerfication.

I’m submitting a riff from an EP that came out this year, so it definitely is exclusive to said EP as of right now. Entheos’ Primal is 20 minutes of amazing riff after amazing riff. I could have just picked a time at random and submitted that, but instead I’m championing my favorite riff from closer ‘Form and Void’ (3:35).
