You wake in the witching hour, stumbling through dark corridors to the bathroom; speed is of the essence as the memories of a pleasant dream sublimate through your skull. As you perch upon the porcelain, a hypnic jerk jolts through you, and you tumble backwards, falling through a tunnel that’s opened beneath you. Toppling head over heels, you scrape at the tunnel’s edges and feel slick flesh beneath your fingers. All is dark besides the dim light through the toilet’s aperture high above—a light that wanes as the lid descends, ringed with swollen gums and the cruel fangs of a carnivore. Crystal Coffin – The Curse of Immortality (Independent) [Symphonic Blackened Death]
The Curse of Immortality is that rare concept album that delivers as a complete work and on the level of individual songs. The relative simplicity of the riffing and overall structure allows the band to add layer upon layer of synths and guitar leads to their compositions without suffocating the songwriting. The outcome is an enthralling bit of theater—what I wish people meant more often when they said atmoblack.
From ferocious blasting to anthemic melodies, there’s variety in these “scenes” (you can see here that I’ve had a swig of the Koolaid!) that is often missing from the genre’s epic-length behemoths (lmoa got ur ass Nerdgal) that ring hollow with a dearth of ideas and movement. One would assume that an extreme metal concept album must take the form of a double LP with a smattering of 1-minute ambient fluff tracks, but Crystal Coffin respect themselves and their audience, keeping the story taut at just over 40 minutes. This band remains unsigned and labels should feel bad—somebody needs to put a nail in this coffin! -Roldy
