This Toilet Tuesday (6/12/18)

It’s Toilet Tuesday, and you know the drill: new jams and tiny reviews to go with them. This is an inordinately good week, too; Link, Lacertilian, and I have picked out a couple good ones, but it was a tough choice deciding what to highlight. It’s particularly solid for tech death and black metal (check out that Avantgarde Music split if you like what you hear from Cor Scorpii), and A Sound of Thunder and Chthe’ilist will be bringing it hard as well. There should be a little something for everybody down there.

Cor Scorpii – Ruin (Karisma Records) [Melodic Black Metal]
Listen

Following the trails left by the legendary melodic black metal act, Windir, the Norwegian outfit Cor Scorpii is still on the fight crafting the memorable sound of the Sognametal. The ensemble, led by the former Windir keyboardist, releases this week their second full-lenght, titled Ruin. From the few glimpses available, this is another album that all melodic seekers should write in their magic books. Expect cascades of great memorable musical landscapes and an earth rumbling freezing riff work. If you do not believe my expectations, go ahead and pay a listen to “Fotefar” right now. 6/15/18 (Link)

Burial in the Sky – Creatio et Hominus (Independent) [Atmospheric Tech Death]
Stream

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t think I’m ever going to tire of this ethereal style of tech death, at least not as long as it stays this consistent. Burial in the Sky had a solid showing with 2016’s Persistence of Thought, but it lacked flow in some places, skipping to new ideas rather than smoothly transitioning to them. Creatio et Hominus feels like a more consistent, fully-realized version of what they set out to do on their previous effort, and it is beautiful in its openness. It’s also very laid back for a tech death album; as of now, there’s no better way to chill while enjoying some blastbeats. 6/10/18 (Spear)

Hoth – Astral Necromancy (Independent) [Melodic Black Metal]
Listen

I’ve been staring this album in its empty eye sockets for months now; the will to dive into what promised to be icy black metal had eluded me for some time. I’m glad I decided to take the plunge, though, as Hoth brings all kinds of unexpected delights on Astral Necromancy. There aren’t many songwriting surprises here, save perhaps for the heavy metal influenced “Passage into Entropy,” but I was taken aback by how well composed this is. Hooks abound here, and the band is careful not to linger too long on or return too frequently to any one idea. Between the varied songwriting and excellent guitar work, there’s a lot to enjoy on Astral Necromancy6/15/18 (Spear)

Deus Vermin – Monument to Decay (Independent) [Blackened Death Metal]
Stream

We got the scoop on these UK-based maniacs from G.M (Barshasketh) on the inaugural Friday Guest List early last year, just prior to the band releasing the blindingly brief 2-track debut demo. Monument To Decay is a slightly more substantial 20-odd minute offering of explosive and profoundly scathing death metal. While far from being a one-dimensional blast-fest, there aren’t many moments to be found here which waver from a near psychotic level of intensity. This was name your price when I grabbed it on the weekend too, so all you’ve got to lose is your corporeal attachment to life. FFO: Vahrzaw, Dead Congregation, Ignivomous. 14/6/18 (Lacertilian).
