This Toilet Tuesday (1/30/18)
Welcome again to This Toilet Tuesday! We’ve got plenty of tasty jams for you this week, and Hans and I have picked out a couple of them for your immediate enjoyment. It’s a particularly solid week for thrash; no better time than now to shut your brain off and give yourself whiplash. Or just subject your coworkers to it if you’re the office-dwelling type.
Malichor – Nightmares and Abominations (Iron, Blood, and Death Corporation) [Black Thrash]

Oh hey, it’s Cthulhu. Always nice to see him, even if Malichor aren’t trying to sound eerie or otherworldly. What you get instead is some straight rockin’ blackened thrash without the somewhat tinny sound that seems de rigueur for the genre. Together with the raspy vocals, this shifts the weight more to the thrash side of the scale, but there’s still plenty of blasts and tremolos. Nothing to excite the cultists and fish people, perhaps, but hey, even ancient deities wanna just rock out with their tentacles out from time to time. This is not an EP by the way, it’s the first half of the album. 01/31/18 (Hans)
…Under a Full Moon – Chamber of Hatred (Independent) [Black Doom]

Doom Metal with a Black Metal aesthetic? Isn’t that just DSBM? Yes and no. There’s good, old school black metal vocals, a pretty raw sound, and plenty of synths, but there’s also growling and an uncharacteristically prominent low end, complete with audible bass guitar. The slow, repetitive riffs and pensive synths are really doing something for me. I hope the awful vocals in the second track are an outlier, because then this album could really be a nicely moody soundtrack to this bummer of a winter. 01/31/18 (Hans)
Nightbreed – Beyond Inferno (Witches Brew) [Thrash]

I don’t get excited about thrash very often these days, but the two tracks Nightbreed have out right now have me chomping at the bit for more. The core of their music isn’t anything you haven’t heard before, but it’s all about the execution. The band flies by with melodies reminiscent of the more diabolical side of Encyrcle with ferocity to match, and it’s rad as hell. 1/31/18 (Spear)
