Grand Cadaver – Madness Comes (Majestic Mountain Records [Death Metal]

HM-2 death with some “n’roll” sprinkled in and some cool ideas that keep it from feeling too generic. I would like it if the songs kept sounding as interesting as their intros, but for what it is, this is still pretty enjoyable. 2/12/21 (Hans)
Crawl Below – 9 Mile Square (Lawnmowerjetpack Records) [Post-Metal]

Hm. Hmm hmm hmm. The music is very sombre and doomy, but the songwriting is just engaging enough that the songs don’t feel too long. Vocals can be iffy at times, but fit the mood. Choruses could be lifted from rock ballads, but somehow appeal to the teen goth in me. I can’t quite tell if this just fits this dreary winter morning really well or if it has power beyond that, but I’ll be checking the full album to find out. 2/12/21 (Hans)
Serenity in Murder – Reborn (Oyster Bros Records) [Melodeath]

Few things are as exciting as when a dead band you really like comes back sounding even better than before their split. Serenity in Murder was already one of the better melodic death metal acts of the past few years in my estimation, and Reborn is sounding great so far. Each of the two singles have a very different vibe, with “The Glow of Embers” taking after the grandiose, majestic style of bands like Wintersun and Whispered, where “Plead For Your Life” would feel right at home on a Fleshgod Apocalypse record. Melomaniacs will want to keep an eye on this one. 2/12/21 (Spear)
