This Toilet Tuesday is upon us once more, and it’s time to indulge in your music gluttony. Hans, Hessian, and I have picked out a few tasty morsels, but feel free to pick over the table yourselves as well. It’s a pretty solid week overall, and you should find something down there to satisfy your cravings.

Hænesy – Katruzsa (Independent) [Earthen Black Metal]
Listen to “Katruzsa IV”

I generally find that this kind of forest-worshiping atmospheric black metal tends to fall on the boring side, but I gotta admit that these fellows kind of hit the nail on the head. This sounds like the perfect soundtrack for cowering amongst the trees by yourself, and the extremely sparse, peculiarly distorted vocals do give the impression that the earth itself is opening up to plead its woes to you in an exasperated hiss. Now if only I could find a black-and-white forest… 6/20/18 (Hans)

Medieval Demon – Medieval Necromancy (Hells Headbangers) [Black Metal]
Listen

Alright, this one kinda skirts lolbuttz territory, but if you can get past the band pic and the first impression of sloppy craftsmanship, there’s some pretty fun old school black metal here. They heavily reference first wave era eastern Europe, not unlike Malokarpatan did last year, but the nature/folk influence is replaced with Satan. That includes synths that are thankfully not overbearing and create a wonderfully corny, evil atmosphere. Together with the dusty sound, this easily throws you back a good twenty years, which is incidentally the time these guys released their last album. I daresay they haven’t aged a day. 6/22/18 (Hans)

Acid Priest – Drop Out (Independent) [Stoner Punk/Heavy Metal]
Stream

I would say that Acid Priest isn’t your dad’s heavy metal band, except that they totally are. These three hooligans effortlessly intertwine upbeat NWOBHM riffage with swinging blues licks the way Tony Iommi would have done if he ever filled in for Thin Lizzy, yet they do it with a vicious fervor that would make them welcome at any basement punk show. It’s basically BBQ rock except that the vocalist sounds like he’s burning alive. I didn’t know I needed it until I heard it, but now I need more. All hail the Acid Priest! (HessianHunter)

Arthedain – Infernal Cadence of the Desolate (Naturmacht Productions) [Melodic Black Metal]
Stream

Arthedain’s newest arrives on an icy squall in stark contrast to the early summer heat. As with last week’s Hoth release, Infernal Cadence is of a highly melodic persuasion, though this goes in a more atmospheric direction than the former. It’s also a little more clean-cut in terms of production than much black metal (which is the norm for Naturmacht releases), but it works well with the robust vocals and multiple layers of guitar. The album does little to stray from genre conventions, but succeeds in taking the listener on a journey and providing some solid riffs along the way. 6/17/18 (Spear)
