This Toilet Tuesday (6/14/16)
The sea is peaceful tonight. You are drifting off to a soothing sleep, lulled by the gentle rocking of the ship and quiet breeze, when a pounding comes at your door. “Maintenance!” a voice calls from the other side. You open your door in a haze, the jolt from the sudden knock starting to give way to groggy resentment. “The head’s clogged again. I think there’s something wrong with the tank, ‘cuz it’s backing up way too often. I’m gonna need you to take a look at that ASAP; don’t want it overflowing in the middle of the night.” You nod sleepily and grab your tools, making your way to the bowels of the ship.
Upon arrival, you immediately notice the septic system making an unhealthy gurgling noise. You check the gauge at the side; it seems the old tank isn’t draining properly. You groan and grab the long wooden rod at the side of the tank; you’ll have to unclog it manually. Climbing atop the malfunctioning machine, you open the hatch at the top and begin poking around the sewage with the rod, trying to find the clog. The rod finally hits something solid, and you start poking at it. Without warning, the rod is jerked down sharply, pulling you into the tank headfirst. Choking on raw sewage, you try to pull yourself back up, but something coils around your neck. You claw desperately at the tendril to no avail. Something sharp pokes at your throat, and blinding pain shoots through you as you feel your flesh ripped open. Bleeding out and feces filling your lungs, darkness takes you quickly.

Terra Tenebrosa – The Reverses (Debemur Morti Productions) [Black Metal/Hardcore]

Terra Tenebrosa have built a career crafting otherworldly, deeply unsettling avant-garde extreme metal that has always been difficult to pin down yet perpetually interesting. After a three year gap, the band is back with a surprisingly more accessible sound, if the first two tracks from The Reverses are anything to go by. Simple riffs and rhythms lead the way and provide a somewhat disorienting juxtaposition against the churning electronic atmosphere and nightmarish vocals. Will the rest of the album match up to the band’s horrific discography, or will a stripped-down approach open this band to wider recognition? I guess we’ll find out on Friday. Winterhymn – Blood & Shadow (SoundAge Productions) [Folk Metal]

I don’t usually get excited about self-described folk metal bands, as many of them tend to be cheap Ensiferum or Eluveitie knockoffs. Winterhymn, on the other hand, shows that there are still fresh ideas on the pseudo-melodeath/kind-of-thrashy end of the spectrum. “Blood of the Moon” has everything I want from a folk metal song; gloriously powerful vocals, energetic riffs, and violins and keyboards that actually add to the music instead of distracting from it. If the rest of the album holds up, Winterhymn will have a place in Valhalla alongside the genre’s best. 6/17/16 (Spear)
