This week, we’ve got a classic rock, upset tummy-core, and fluffy stairs. I don’t want to curse my Dumplings by saying this, but it appears the constipation of the summer may be giving way to an autumnal gush; quality releases abound in the annals below. What delights will you dredge from the murky depths?
Offernat – The Ecstasy of Death (Independent) [Melodic Blackened Death / Sludge / Post-Metal]
After a month away from TTT (and new music in general), I figured I’d want to feature something simple, perhaps something stupid as hell. (These needs were met by Slime Dimension‘s debut LP, Slime Dimension. Their Metal-Archives theme(s)? Slime. Check it out, it’s a lot of fun.) Instead, Offernat had me enthralled across 12 minutes of blackened sludge that evoked feelings beyond just wanting to crawl under a rock and die. Preview track “Tears Dissolved in Light” draws from melodeath in its tangible sense of momentum, sludge’s confrontational energy, and never really stops tacking on influences; fortunately, the band made sure there was a song underneath the eclecticism. From the lacrimal leads of Anareta-era Horrendous to progressions that would feel at home on a pop-punk record, The Ecstasy of Death is set to both bludgeon and bolster listeners this Friday. -Roldy
