Chicago’s Arriver have been creating off-kilter metal since 2006. Their latest record, Emeritus, which dropped earlier this month, defies common descriptors. This five-track album winds its way through death metal, to black metal, to noise rock, and skronk – often within the course of a single song. The band’s art-metal spectrum centers around the stories of the doomed men and women of the April 26, 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It is heavy, sonically and emotionally.
