Flush It Friday: Humming and Singing

…and laughing over those Cemetery Drums.
Embodying the old adage “here for a good time, not for a long time,” Baltimore’s Slumlords released a demo, a slew of EPs, and two LPs in three short years. Originally released by I Scream Records in 2004, the band’s self-titled debut was recently remastered by the band’s guitarist Domenic Romeo for the legendary A389 Recordings. If you missed Slumlords the first time around, prepare yourself for Vitamin X on a drunken Oi bender, No Redeeming Social Value behaving themselves a bit better, and Blood for Blood but not from Boston. Here’s hoping Dom remasters 2006’s On the Stremph! next.
If you can believe it, I peeled myself off the couch to see Agriculture last Monday. Opening for what might be metal’s most exciting band was Atlanta’s own bizarro two-piece Teresa. With a sound as unidentifiable as their name is unsearchable online, Teresa plays some sort of acid-fried experimental jazzed-up noise rock. The bass is distorted to all hell, the vocals are dissonantly intoned and seemingly from another universe, and the drumming is almost impossibly tight. Before this band assuredly gets scooped up by The Flenser, check out 2025’s Void Concrete, a free-wheeling and deeply satisfying tilt-a-whirl through the void.
Let’s slow things down. Way down. The new album Slow, Slow Spectres from Tape Loop Orchestra is out this week on Vaagner, and much like the title suggests, Andrew Hargreaves’ second LP is a haunted, haunting affair. (I feel like I’ve typed that exact phrase before.) “Slow Spectres Humming” is less foreboding and a bit more choral or angelic, borrowing from William Basinski and his ilk. On the other side, “Slow Spectres Singing” is dark, ominous, and portentous. Think the softer side of Daniel Menche or the moodiest, most introspective moments of Barn Owl. It’s dark and Hell is cold.
