This week’s extremely late release list is brought to you by working a surprise overnight shift. I didn’t even get to listen to music over the damn thing, either (I was on the phone the whole time), so who knows how much of this is good! Anyway, dig in and enjoy.
The Night Eternal – Cold Velvet (Metal Blade Records) [Heavy Metal]
Who doesn’t love sadboi heavy metal that you can shake it to? The Night Eternal hits all the stuff you’d want from a heavy metal band, and they hit it hard. The guitars have some exceptional back-and-forth where other bands would be content to ride it out on a straightforward gallop or similarly retread ground. I like how the singer does some Danzig-style vocal affectations without going overboard, too; the whole thing strikes a similar chord as Unto Others/Idle Hands, or like if Pøltergeist listened to a lot of Warlord or something. This is the sort of thing that anyone with any sort affinity for metal should be able to vibe with on some level. 8/21/26 (Spear)
