This Toilet Tuesday (7/5/16)
Welcome to another round of This Toilet Tuesday! This summer is proving to be anything but dry, with tons of good new music on the way. W and I have picked a couple of our favorites from this week, but there’s a lot more where these came from. Be sure to share your picks below!
Anicon – Exegeses (Avantgarde Music) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Toil and Mockery,” “In Shadow and Amber”
Holy crap, this guitar tone is hot fire. Which I guess is why the trees on the cover are burning. Too much fire. That’s what these two Anicon tracks are. Flaming black metal fire straight from the fiery shores of Phlegethon. You NEED to hear this, although I’m not responsible for any third-degree burns done to your ears. FFO: Krallice, Sun Worship, Yellow Eyes 7/7/16 (W.)
Athame – With Cunning Fire and Adversarial Resolve (Grimoire Records) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Five Fold Kiss”
If Anicon are an insidious wildland fire that creeps and torches its way through the countryside, Athame is a volcanic eruption. Lead track “Five Fold Kiss” is all meteoric hunks of molten granite and smothering ash. If the percussion doesn’t crush your cubicle and engulf your coworkers in a river of magma riffs, you may need to consider not working in a bunker. FFO: Craft, Gorgoroth, Aosoth 7/8/16 (W.)
Dust Bolt – Mass Confusion (Napalm Records) [Thrash]
Listen to “Allergy,” “Mass Confusion”
2016 has already been a good year for thrash, and it just keeps getting better. Dust Bolt’s style of thrash will sound familiar to you, but the execution is masterful. The volatile, shifting approach to everything from the tempo to the structure vocal style matches the lyrics, lending them an air of realness that similar thrash bands lack. Mass Confusion is packed with awesome riffs and is not to be missed. 7/8/16 (Spear)
Spellcaster – Night Hides the World (Prosthetic Records) [Heavy Metal]
Listen to “Night Hides the World,” “Betrayal,” “I Live Again”
I don’t listen to a whole lot of old-school heavy metal (or classic metal, or whatever the hell you want to call it); I’ve never really taken the time to dive into the classics, and so many newer bands seem to be using the generally simplistic sound of the genre as an excuse for being bad musicians. Having now encountered Spellcaster, I’m starting to realize I’ve been missing out. The vocals are strong and soaring, and the guitars seem to be locked in a duel for supremacy with each other. It’s immensely satisfying, and now I want more. 7/8/16 (Spear)
