Riff Of The Week: Buzzsaw Edition

Last week we did something a little different and asked you to submit riffs featuring a technique you want to see more of in metal. Turns out 15% of you want more whammy pedal squeals, 22% want more stop-start bendymajigs, 14% want insect-noises, and 23% of you agree with my demand for MOAR PICK SCRAPES EVERYFUCKINGWHERE. However, for some reason 24% of you have trouble hearing every black metal riff ever recorded and can’t seem to find enough tremolo picking in your riffs. Whatever. I’ll just be over here tryna quell my seething irrational rage by vigorously sliding a pick up and down some strings in a suggestively masturbatory motion. RRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHRRRREEEEEWWWWWW
This week we asked for Swedeath/Buzzsaw riffs released after the year 2000. Why post-2000 you ask? Well because I didn’t want 10 entries of this. And whaddyaknow, we got some good-ass riffs to choose from here. Bloodbath – “Year of the Cadaver Race” (Riff @ 0:40)
This is, in my opinion, perhaps one of the most evil and strange Swede death riffs ever recorded. It combines an eerie melody with a weird rythm to create something just- it’s beautiful, really. What? No, I’m not crying! There’s something in my eye!

Dark Tranquillity – “Monochromatic Stains” (Riff @ 1:16)
This was one of my favorite albums back in high school, and to this day I still think it holds well. A well executed marriage of heaviness and melody, ten times better than what In Flames was doing then, and a hundred times better than what In Flames are doing now. “Monochromatic Stains” remains one of their best songs, mostly because of the brilliant riff at 1:16.

Vomitory – “Blessed and Forsaken” (Riff @ 0:34)
I enjoy all their output from the 00s, but this was the first record I heard and shall remain my favourite. The whole build-up at the start of this song is awesome, and after introducing the main riff – also a killer – there’s this bit at 0:34 where they get pretty grind-ish for a little while (wait for the drums to kick in). It never fails to make me a happy Hans.

Insect Warfare – “Endless Execution Thru Violent Restitution” (Riff @ 0:00)
This isn’t Swedeath, and it certainly isn’t Jackyl. This is Texas own voting on the Law of the Saw to serve up some Chainsaw Justice (get it?). If a name like Endless Execution Through Violent Restitution doesnt make you want to listen to all of it, the first song will. Repulsed by Radiation, riff starts at 0:00.

Lavatory – “Blinded By Darkness” (Riff @ 2:11)
CHAINSAW YOUR LIMBS OFF AND FLUSH THEM DOWN THE LAVATORY OF HECK INTO THE SEWER OF BLINDNESS AND DISPOSE OF YOUR OWN BODY IN KUALA LUMPUR (translates to: “muddy confluence”) WHICH WE ALL KNOW IS THE SWEDEN OF MALAYSIA

Gatecreeper – “Lost Forever” (Riff @ 0:00)
The only hard part of choosing a riff for this week was narrowing it down to one from this album, because seriously, 2016’s Sonoran Depravation is chock full of delicious Swedeath riffy goodness. You could literally pick a random timestamp from anywhere on this album and have a riff worthy of this competition. Something about the opening of Lost Forever tickles my fancy though, so it gets the nod for this week’s Buzzsaw Battle Royale. [Insert various obnoxious saw noises and maniacal laughter here]

Skelethal – “Pantheon Of The Abyss” (Riff @ 1:15)
Of The Depths… only came out in May but already it has chopped my 2017 Swedeath playlist to pieces, between this and Winds Of Leng I can achieve climax without even so much as looking at the input jack of a hot HM-2. If you’re after something that covers all the bases of classic acts such as Carnage, Dismember, Entombed, et al. then look no further. Riffs like the one at 1:15 are all the proof you need.
