Riff Of The Week: S L O W Edition
Riffs from Undeath, False, Nylithia, Cathedral, Demortifier, Profetus, Abominism, and Foghat. Who’s got your vote?
Last week for our Under The Influence Edition we saw a mid-week comeback from Ripped To Shreds who took down the legendary Swedes in Sacramentum.
This week our theme is S L O W
Here’s what you sent in…

Foghat – ‘Slow Ride’ (Riff @ 0:04)
Obligatory.
Evhron
Undeath – ” Pursued Then Consumed” (Riff @ 0:00)
Undeath is fucking nasty. Both EP’s are some of my favourite stuff to come out this year. The breakdown on track 3 (2:20 w/ buildup) would also fit the theme pretty well, but I figure there’s gonna be a few of those.
Spear
Nylithia – ‘Fast All The Time’ (Riff @ 0:00)
What is this “slow” you speak of? FAST ALL THE TIME
Megachiles
False – ‘Rime on the Song of Returning’ (Riff @ 6:48)
The dang ole song titles in this album are almost as long as the songs themselves. Buts that’s okay, because False play real fast. At least until 6:48 on this track. They spend the next several minutes layering onto a big, dumb slow riff. It goes hard. [Lizard Note: vote for this]
Bonus: they aren’t nazis!
GoatForest
Demortifier – “S.L.O.T.H.” (Riff @ 0:13)
Sloths are slow. This sounds like a sloth drowning in a sewer. It is a good.
Enemy Of The Sun
Cathedral – ‘Ebony Tears’ (Riff @ 2:06)
I have a cold, and all this NyQuil makes everything seem slower than what it really is
Iron Goddess of Mercy
Abominism – “Burn Them Slowly” (Riff @ 1:57)
I was out of town for most of the week, so I didn’t have time to over-think my submission. Look, the word “slow” is right there in the cot damned title! This album has gotten a lot of play from me this summer, in no small part to moody weirdo riffs like this one. <3
Lacertilian
Profetus – ‘Blood Of Saturn’ (Riff @ 0:00)
As mentioned on this week’s Riff-Raff Podcast I’ve been pretty rapt with the news of some top-tier funeral doom being on the way. Could’ve picked pretty much any track of this record and it would have been an exemplary exequy example.
Next week we’re going back 30 years
